Menik River

Kataragama Menik River, which starts from Namunukula mountain in Uva, flows for 114 km and ends in the sea. Menik River is considered as a river with holy water. The devotees who come to the Kataragama shrine come to worship the temple after the water from the Menik River is purified.

Legend has it that in the past no one built houses or bathed above Menik River, which receives water for the worship of God in Kataragama Temple and for bathing in Ashta Phala Bodhi. Based on the rituals of the temple, Menik River has also been named port markets.
